This site contains poetry which are read by the authors. You are able to search via topic, or  by poem genre (limerick, rhyme, couplets, rap etc). You could use this to explore a form of poetry before you get children to attempt their own.

The Owl and the Pussycat.

Look at the history of children’s poetry by looking at classic poems such as the owl and the pussy cat which was written by Edward Lear in 1871. The children could search for classic poems and could then record themselves reading them on an ipad or video camera.  These poems could then be shared with all the children. You could discuss how the language differs from modern times and use a Venn diagram to contrast and compare.
